Sausage! Sausage! Sausage!

Yummy Sausage

Last week, we went to Toronto for a 5-day vacation. We visited Toronto many years ago with our parents and did not remember much about the grand Canadian city. However, there was one thing we did remember: The street cart sausages. It’s kind of funny that the only thing that really stuck in our memory was the large, juicy, sausage. Thick meat wedged between a large “sausage bun” and garnished with different toppings. I couldn’t remember much about that trip we took years ago, but I did remember the magical feeling in my mouth after taking a bite from the sausage.

The sausage was satisfying and enough to make it a complete meal.  But one wasn’t enough. We couldn’t leave Toronto without eating another sausage, so the day before our flight back to the U.S., we visited another street cart! When we arrived in downtown Toronto, we knew that the sausage was going to be the first of our Toronto eats. It wasn’t long before we found it! Just like NYC, Toronto is filled with many street cart vendors selling the famous Toronto food. We immediately ordered our $4 (Canadian dollars) Hot Italian Sausage.

Unlike a hot dog, the sausage is huge and the vendors make neat slices in the meat before placing the sausage and bun on the grill to heat up. The grill marks are visibly noticeable and warm steam arises from the meat. The sausage is then placed inside a “sausage bun” (it’s basically a tasty hot dog bun, but just much bigger so it could fit the sausage). There are many toppings to choose from (hot sauce, mustard, BBQ sauce, ketchup, sauerkraut, onions, pickles, and hot peppers to name a few) and we were able to add as much as we wanted.
